In many ways, search engines knit together the entire internet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Search Engine vs Web Browser<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before we dive into the meat of all things search engines, let\u2019s clear up a common misconception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Search engines and web browsers work in tandem<strong> but they are two completely different tools<\/strong>. A <strong><em>web browser<\/em><\/strong> is like a doorway into the internet. It is a software application that is capable of fetching data from servers worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Using a rendering engine, they translate <a href=\"https:\/\/developer.mozilla.org\/en-US\/docs\/Glossary\/HTML\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Hypertext Markup Language (HTML)<\/a> into the images and text you see on the internet. If you\u2019re reading this, you\u2019re likely on a web browser right now!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some common browsers include Chrome, Firefox, and Safari. Once you step into one of these doorways, you have access to search engines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Definition of \u201cSearch Engine\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In simple terms, a <strong><em>search engine<\/em><\/strong> is a web-based software that connects a user with an information database related to a given query or keyword. If a web browser is a doorway, a search engine is a roadmap you peruse to find relevant information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some of the more popular search engines include Google, Bing, Yahoo, and DuckDuckGo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/beyondbluemedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/what_is_seo-1024x443.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5463\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you type a question or set of keywords into a search engine, results appear on a list referred to as the search engine results page or <strong><em>SERP<\/em><\/strong>. Several factors determine what you see on a SERP that we\u2019ll dig into shortly.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Different Types of Search Engines<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Believe it or not, <strong>there are multiple types of search engines<\/strong> aside from the ones we use to crawl the internet in search of answers to our infinite questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Directories&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This type of search engine relies on humans to index online content. That entails manually sifting through site descriptions submitted by site owners and either added to the appropriate category or rejected by the directory admin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some examples of a directory are Yelp or Yellow pages.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the emergence of algorithms and crawling, these types of search engines are rendered obsolete today for most searches (more on this below).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hybrids&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hybrids are powered by a combination of manual and crawler-based indexing. This is mostly used as a secondary method to filter out sites flagged as spam. But as crawling grows more advanced, even this hybrid-based indexing method is slowly being phased out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A hybrid search engine many are familiar with is Google Maps. It allows for user editing and algorithmic updating.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Crawlers&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So what is a crawler? The <strong>most commonly used search engine globally utilized on a daily basis is a crawler<\/strong>. This type of search engine relies on algorithmic software to search the web for content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bots or spiders \u2018crawl\u2019 through the internet in search of web pages, images, videos, and more digital content to index. They do the heavy lifting as far as categorizing and ranking for relevancy goes. Google Search is a crawler-based search engine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We\u2019ll further discuss crawlers and how they work soon.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">On-site Search Engines&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A final search engine to acknowledge is found within a website. On-site or internal search engines are used to navigate the content on an individual site. It usually appears as a magnifying glass at the top of the site.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here\u2019s an example from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">National Geographic<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/beyondbluemedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/national_geographic-1024x459.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5464\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is an especially useful feature on blogs or e-Commerce sites that host many pages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With a search engine plugin, a website visitor can type in a category or product and locate it with ease; all based on the keyword search connecting with page tags.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Does Crawling Work?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you want to understand modern search engines and how they function, it\u2019s important to learn how <strong><em>crawling<\/em><\/strong> works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Crawling-based search engines are powered by algorithms. Bots \u201ccrawl\u201d through links to find new and updated URLs. The algorithm then determines what (and where) content should appear on the SERP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is called <strong><em>indexing<\/em><\/strong>. These results are ranked based on which content most efficiently resolves a given query search.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Indexing<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are several factors that bots consider when searching for relevant content to index. As they scan through a site, their ultimate goal is to find information that will best answer a user\u2019s search query. <strong>But<\/strong> <strong>that\u2019s only one piece of the puzzle<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A page is also indexed and subsequently ranked based on page load speed, usability, mobile optimization, and over <a href=\"https:\/\/backlinko.com\/google-ranking-factors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">200 more search ranking signals<\/a> just on Google. Once this data is collected, if deemed the ideal candidate for the search, a site is added to the index and will be visible on the SERP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Presented and ranked search results are also based on the <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondbluemedia.com\/blog\/marketing\/what-is-searcher-intent-and-why-should-we-care\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1688\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">user intent<\/a> of a keyword. If a search term is a question, local (i.e. food near me), or transactional (i.e. buy headphones), the results pages will look completely different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>NOTE: <\/strong>The SERP is flooded with billions of pages. Search results can offer millions of page results at a time, so a site doesn\u2019t just rank for a keyword search on page 1 right off the bat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With constant changes being made to search engine algorithms on a daily basis, ranking on the SERP is a moving target. Site owners must continually update their sites and other digital assets to remain relevant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2ND NOTE: <\/strong>Pages can\u2019t be indexed if they are marked <strong>noindex<\/strong> in your <a href=\"https:\/\/neilpatel.com\/blog\/robots-txt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">robots.txt<\/a> file.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Importance of Links<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Links serve as a sort of highway for bots to discover new content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Internal links<\/em><\/strong> are crucial in indexing. An internal link is a link from one page of a site (example.com\/home) to a different page (example.com\/what-is-a-search-engine) hosted on the same site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If a site doesn\u2019t maintain a network of internal links, a bot will have a harder time crawling it. On top of this, pages that rank really well and connect to other internal pages improve website performance! Getting your internal link structure right is imperative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/beyondbluemedia.com\/blog\/marketing\/the-dos-and-donts-of-proper-link-building\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"3976\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><em>Backlinks<\/em><\/strong><\/a><strong><em> or inbound links<\/em><\/strong> are another way to gain credibility as a site. This type of hyperlink is directed to an external site. Crawling backlinks is a major way bots discover and rank content. If someone backlinks to your content, that signals authority and relevance to bots. Probably not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s because it\u2019s not Dominos&#8217; direct website address, it\u2019s another domain URL that could be used as a variant of the <a href=\"https:\/\/raventools.com\/marketing-glossary\/root-domain\/#:~:text=Root%20Domain%20is%20the%20highest,(e.g.%20rootdomain.com).&amp;text=The%20term%20root%20domain%20means,whole%20or%20about%20your%20website.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">root domain<\/a> if Dominos purchased it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Search engines are so vital, even for the most infinitesimal things imaginable. They make our lives so much easier.
